Les gorges du Verdon, lac de Sainte-Croix, Moustiers Sainte-Marie
The Verdon cliffs have been inhabited since the dawn of humanity. Today the most beautiful canyon in Europe [1] [2] [3] is part of the Verdon Regional Natural Park, a meeting point between Upper and Lower Provence with the Alpilles, Valensole plateau, Verdon canyon and lakes : Castillon and Chaudanne lakes in the upper course of the river, Sainte-Croix created in 1975 [4] [5] [6], see Aiguines [7] [8] and Les Salles sur Verson [9], Quinson and Esparron. South of beautiful Manosque, the emerald torrent born at 2500 meters in the heart of the Alps, flows into the Durance.
Each climbing site [10] of the Verdon offers suitable zones for beginners and experienced climbers. This is a worldwide famous place for climbing, the cliffs of Escales are among the most renowned (see : Gorges du Verdon, Galetas and Point Sublime). At Moustiers-Sainte-Marie or in the Verdon canyon for example, the calcareous rock is good or excellent. 1500 various routes in the Verdon, 20-300 m, all levels, 20 routes at Moustiers, 25-50 m, all levels.
Built at a height of 634 metres, Moustiers [11] [12] is a wonder : light is perfect, water abundant. Numerous artists and craftsmen have chosen to live there. Between the two rocks [13], a star hanging from a 227 metres long chain has been shining for centuries. It is the thanksgiving sign of a knight who came back alive from the Crusades. Local products and crafts : olive oil and olive tapenade, wine, lavender, honey, thyme and fruit, truffles, cheese, Sisteron lamb, provencal markets and rich Moustiers-Sainte-Marie chinaware... All air, land and water summer or winter sports, hot-water springs (Digne-les-Bains or Greoux), litterature (Jean Giono) and adventure (Alexandra David-Neel), churches, monuments and history.
