Var

Cote d'Azur : Grimaud and Port-Grimaud

Grimaud, Saint-Roch windmill (17th c) above river Garde

Var, March 2000.Massif des Maures and Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Beautiful clouds alternating with blue sky give to this blessed region a particular light.

Overlooking the Giscle valley, its windmill [1] and the surroundings, Grimaud, with the ruins of its impressive chateau [2] [3] [4], its narrow streets and flowered stairs that snake up and down [5] [6] [7], cross and rejoin through vaulted passes [8], its squares [9] and bowl players, has kept its Provence charm, an invitation to stay. Once a Neolithic dwelling, Grimaud faces its bay [10], yesterday a marshy land between Saint-Tropez and Sainte-Maxime.

Port-Grimaud, the marina-city created by François Spoerry, an architect and sailor, was born there in 1966 [11] [12] [13]. Built over 161 acres, the gentle and delicately coloured city is married to the sea [14] [15] [16] ; people can both walk and sail to their house [17] [18].
