

During the celebrations of Gayant, each Sunday after July 6th, Father Gayant, his wife Marie Cagenon and their children are shown around : Douai celebrates the giants. Father Gayant [1] was born in 1530. 8 m tall, he weighs 370 kg and requires 6 carriers ; Lady Gayant, born in 1531, is 6,25 m tall and they have three children : Jacquot, Fillon and famous Binbin [2], a nice 2,40 m tall baby whom only true Douai people have a right to kiss. The company is followed by "The Wheel of Fortune" [3]. A drummer and official collectors dressed in white and red walk ahead. Sunday 9 am : everybody steps in the Town Hall for a series of photos, the Lord Mayor's speech, pigeon releases, handfulls of sweets, brass bands followed by an afternoon parade with a number of halts to refresh the exhausted carriers.
Numerous floats and folklore groups from different countries - as this group of Gilles [4] march during three days and shower the streets with confetti. Then on Tuesday evening, the giants turn back to silence for a whole year. Till the following month of July.
